Units of Analysis for Internet Communication

http://jcmc.indiana.edu/vol1/issue4/december.html

1996

December John

When communication researchers make claims about the relationship of media to individuals or society, they use the term media to mean a variety of things. For example, a researcher might try to prove the claim "television causes X," where X might be anything from aggressive behavior to bad vision or a crisis in a sense of self. In this case, is the researcher talking about the television signals in the air, people who work at television stations, people who produce or act in television programs, the television programs themselves, television receiving sets, or some or all of these things?

Ethnomethodology and the study of online communities: exploring the cyber streets

http://informationr.net/ir/4-1/paper50.html

1988

Thomsen Steven R.

Drawing from the authors’ current research programs, this essay explores the basic dimensions of online communities and the concomitant need for scholars to rethink the assumptions that undergrid historic paradigms about the nature of social interaction, social bonding, and empirical experience.

Social Research Methods and the Internet: A Thematic Review

http://www.socresonline.org.uk/9/2/hine.html

2004

Hine Christine

Introduction

1.1 Sociological Research Online did not set out to be a journal about the Internet. It could more accurately be framed as "action research" where the Internet is concerned, since by the practical doing of Internet publishing, and by trying to exploit the possibilities of the technology, the journal has set out to change and challenge existing practice (Bulmer and Stanley, 1996). It is possibly not surprising, however, that it has often attracted sociologists who are interested in the Internet as a topic. Without ever setting out to be an authority on sociology of the Internet and sociology done via the Internet, the journal has over the course of time become a rich resource for finding sociologists who are unafraid of the Internet and who use it in interesting and fruitful ways in their research…

This special issue of the Jurnal Antropologi Indonesia originated in a suggestion by Nuria W. Soeharto, a student in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Indonesia. She wanted a session on the Internet and Identity included in the 3rd Journal conference scheduled for July, 2002, in Denpasar, Bali. Her interest in the topic flowed from her own experience of and research on the role of the Internet in the Indonesian reformasi of 1998.

Acting Ethically in Online Ethnography: A Brief Outline of Issues and Techniques.

http://www.veale.com.au/kylie/pdf/veale-2003-actingethicallyonlineethnography.pdf

2003

Veale K. J.

Ethnography is a long established method for research and analysis that involves the immersion of the researcher into the activities and practises are being researched. Streams of this discipline emerged with the birth of the Internet aptly named “online ethnography” or “virtual ethnography”, to describe this research in the content of net or cyber-cultures.
